UPCYCLING | BUCKET HAT
About the project:
Upcycling, also known as creative reuse, is the process of transforming by-products, waste materials, useless, or unwanted products into new materials or products perceived to be of greater quality, such as artistic value or environmental value.
This project was about creating fashion products out of waste or unused items, by creatively upcycling them according to a theme, and giving out a message through the product.
I chose to raise awareness about Autism through my product.
What is Autism?
A serious developmental disorder that impairs the ability to communicate and interact.
Autism spectrum disorder impacts the nervous system and affects the overall cognitive, emotional,
social and physical health of the affected individual. The range and severity of symptoms can vary widely. Common symptoms include difficulty with communication, difficulty with social interactions, obsessive interests and repetitive behaviours. Early recognition, as well as behavioural, educational
and family therapies may reduce symptoms and support development and learning.

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder are often obsessive in their behaviors, activities, and interests. They tend to harbor obsessive attachment to unusual objects (rubber bands, keys, light switches).
Here, I have attached a few of those objects to the hat to represent the same.

Individuals with Autism have an uneven skill set meaning, they'll be very bad at certain skills, but exceptionally good at others. More often than not, they are amazing at mathematics. The nut attached with the two can pull-tabs represent this unevenness in skill set. The nut represents maths and engineering whereas the can tabs represent craft and creativity.
I have used a sky blue coloured thread to sew the elements because tints of blue are used worldwide
(apart from the rainbow spectrum) for the representation of Autism.

I have used flowers to depict the delicateness with which individuals with Autism need to be treated because they tend to get overwhelmed easily and strictness only makes it worse. The colours of the flowers are those of the rainbow spectrum because those are used by various organisations to represent and spread awareness about Autism.
